L'esigenza di creare un sito come questo nasce da molteplici motivi: la spinta principale è nata dal fatto che, in particolare, in Italia c'è stato un periodo in cui le strade ferrate, di qualunque scartamento, venissero considerate non produttive dal punto di vista economico, sia per la mancanza di volontà da parte di coloro che erano preposti allo scopo sia per tanti altri motivi, non ultimo quello che, successivamente alla conclusione del Secondo Conflitto Mondiale, ha portato lentamente e gradualmente all'evoluzione del trasporto (di persone e cose) dal "ferro" alla "gomma".
Per di più veniva riscontrata la necessità politica ed industriale di dare "man forte" alla rinascita di quei grandi gruppi industriali che facevano degli autoveicoli il proprio "core business" (tipo FIAT, ecc.) e si è così giunti al taglio sistematico di tutto quanto non era ritenuto più necessario: da qui incominciò ad essere usato il termine "ramo secco", principalmente per quanto riguarda il settore ferroviario, con tagli indiscriminati di tutte quelle linee che inesorabilmente venivano soppiantate dai trasporti automobilistici pubblici e privati ritenendo il servizio ferroviario obsoleto, lento, costoso ed inutile in quanto il "progresso" stava portando verso la "motorizzazione di massa".
In più, con il passare degli anni, l'automobile diventava il mezzo che consentiva di muoversi comodamente, senza vincoli ed in completa indipendenza.

Ecco brevemente, ed a grandi linee, spiegato, il perché del sito FERROVIE DISMESSE.

Un'altra ragione, certamente non secondaria, è quella che, sia il webmaster sia le persone che hanno deciso di collaborare fin dall'inizio con chi ha ideato il sito, è dettata dalla passione per tutto quanto ruota intorno al mondo dei treni e delle ferrovie: in parole povere... l'amore verso il Mondo Ferroviario nella sua totalità e con un particolare "occhio di riguardo" a quanto "c'era una volta... ed oggi non c'è più".
